I am sure you are wondering what is the difference between Otter AI vs Zoom AI Companion.

I did extensive research on both tools, and I want to help you find the right meeting AI assistant.

I did try Otter AI for a long time, and I found that it truly does a good job in real-time live meeting transcription. Another cool feature is its real-time captions and searchable transcripts. However, it does have some limitations.

But if you use Zoom more than any other AI meeting platform, I found that Zoom AI Companion could be better for you. I was quite surprised to see that it does a lot more than just transcription, it has an AI-powered Q&A, smart summarization and (my favourite) a Whiteboard for ideation.

So, which one should you choose? Well, I used both extensively and let me show you all of the features and pricing details so you can decide which one is the best for you.

💡 We will also be talking about Jamie, our tool in this comparison article. And we will show how it might be what you are looking for!

TL;DR: Which AI Meeting Assistant is Best?

  • Otter AI: Best for real-time transcription and team collaboration features.
  • Zoom AI Companion: Best for Zoom app users, meeting Q&A, smart summaries and Whiteboard.
  • Jamie: Best for all meetings with real-time AI help, no bots, works everywhere, online or offline.

Otter AI and Zoom AI Companion both transcribe meetings, but they lack offline capabilities and don't work on all platforms.

Let me first discuss Otter AI. I used Otter AI for live transcription over Zoom and Google Meet and it works fine, but I am not a huge fan of the AI summaries that Otter AI generates. I also found the speaker tagging to be quite shallow. I sometimes had to manually label the speakers which consumed a lot of time for me.

Speaking of Zoom AI Companion, It works great if you are using the Zoom meeting, for all your meetings (which is honestly hard to do these days). But it sometimes completely gets ignored because some clients would want me and my team to hold meetings on other platforms (which we do a lot).

One thing that made me quite uncomfortable in Otter.ai is the bot that joins your meetings. Both Otter and Zoom AI Companion are quite useless when your internet goes down and their AI features aren't very helpful beyond basic summaries according to many users.

Jamie our tool works offline, and it has no bots joining your meetings, and it generates these great meeting notes that look like a human wrote them. Plus our Executive Assistant Sidebar can find old meeting information instantly. Just like how you would use Zoom AI Companion's chat feature, Jamie has one too. (but better, we will show you how!)  Read on to find out below.

Jamie Features

Meeting Transcription & Notes

I have spent a lot of time on Jamie's transcription and note-taking features, and I have to say that they are remarkable (and I am not saying this because it's our tool).

I have talked to many users who used to use Otter.ai but then switched to Jamie. And they just cannot stop talking about Jamie's generated meeting notes. But you don't have to take my word for it. I'll show you what a former Otter.ai user said.

Hello, Team Jamie.

It’s not often that I drop a resource I use daily like a hot potato for something else. Congrats to your entire team on your Jamie platform. I found it today, reviewed a few videos, read a bit, and decided to try the Free subscription.

I listened to a webinar and decided to test Jamie against my Otter account. They both ran on my Mac desktop, recorded at the exact same time (for only 5 minutes) to see how they performed on the same video at the same time.

These screenshots speak for themselves. Now, to decide which subscription of Jamie to switch to. 😊

Curious to see the screenshots? Here they are!

Here is the full meeting summary that Otter.ai transcribed for their 5-minute meeting.

Transcript Summary of a real user who previously used Otter.ai and now switched to Jamie's pro version

I wanted to show this to you because it shows literally exactly what I love about our meeting notes. Our smart topic detection is really good at breaking it down into the right chapters for us.

You can read it skim through from top to bottom and still get ALL the details (yes, all of them).

And if you are like me and need info even faster, then you are going to love what I am about to show you next.

⚠️ The emojis in the screenshots are also from the previous Otter.ai user. We just had to say that.

Executive Assistant Sidebar (CTRL + J)

Next, let's talk about my favourite feature in Jamie, the Executive Assistant Sidebar. This is the one feature I have been using a lot!

This is what the Sidebar can do for you:

  • I love how it retrieves past meeting information - you simply ask Jamie (it really is that simple).
  • It doesn't disturb your workflow at all. I hated switching between my browsers and ChatGPT, but now I just press CTRL + J, and  the sidebar shows up on the right side of my screen. And I can just chat with it, whether I am in a meeting or doing something else, just like how I would ChatGPT.
  • Hit CTRL + J again to close it. (I literally do this 50 times a day, it's muscle memory now!)
  • Suppose you are in a meeting and are stuck when a client wants you to recall past meeting information. You can open the Sidebar and retrieve that information for you. Or even brainstorm!

Choose from ChatGPT 4, Claude 3 Opus, to Jamie's own LLM
  • Jamie: I use this LLM when I need to find my own past meeting notes.
  • Claude 3 Opus: This is what I use when I want to write something like emails, it's great for drafting emails.
  • GPT-4: This is what I use when I want to have web search capabilities or retrieve information.

💡 I am really happy to tell you that everything I mentioned here is available in the free plan. All the premium features are in the free plan. So please go give it a try before making a purchasing decision.

Works Offline and in Any Video Conferencing Platform

You just download Jamie as a native application on your device and trust me it's plug and play from there on.

All I do is click "Start Meeting", and it starts transcribing by picking up audio from both speakers and microphone.

What does this mean? and How does this benefit you?

  •  You can record a meeting whether I am online or offline.
  • You can start transcribing a meeting at any time, you don't need to have an online meeting scheduled (perfect for those random/ad-hoc conversations).
  • Works great with all video conferencing platforms and browsers. (no compatibility issues!)
  • It doesn't use bots. If you hate bots that feel like privacy invasions that make meetings awkward, then Jamie could be the AI meeting assistant you are looking for.

Speaker Identification

Speaker identification is how Jamie knows who's speaking in the meeting. Once Jamie learns your voice, it can recognise you in your next meeting.

You only need to train it about a maximum of 5 times to truly understand a voice. Until then you have to manually insert the name of the speaker. But after Jamie learns the voice, you don't have to!

Jamie is the right choice if you:

✅ Need offline transcription for in-person or remote meetings.

✅ Need a bot-free experience with top-notch privacy, GDPR compliance, and robust data security.

✅ Want AI tools that go beyond manual transcription (e.g., brainstorming, web search and real-time assistance).

Jamie isn’t the best option if you:

❌ Need real-time transcription during meetings (Jamie processes audio after meetings).

❌ Require video recording alongside the audio files.

Otter AI Features

OtterPilot for Automated Meeting Transcription

Otterpilot | otter ai's bot

Otter.ai's most popular feature is called OtterPilot. OtterPilot joins meetings on Zoom, Google Meet and Teams. It basically joins the meeting as you, and then transcribes the meeting in real time.

I like the fact that it shows live captions in real-time. However, not so much with the bot joining the meeting. As it can feel intrusive and awkward.

When your meeting is over, Otter provides you with a clean summary of what was discussed. This is helpful if you don’t want to read pages and pages of conversations.

AI-Powered Collaboration and Search

otter.ai otter chat

With Otter.ai you can actually search your notes by keyword, speaker name or date. I like how it highlights important sections. It really helps you identify the main topics quickly.

One of users' favourites is the Otter AI Chat. You can join in, ask questions about what happened in the meeting, and simply chat with chat with it.

Seamless Calendar and Workflow Integrations

Intergrations of Otter.ai

Otter.ai integrates with Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, and iOS Calendar. You can set it up to auto-join your scheduled meetings.

You can connect Otter with Dropbox and Zoom so all your meeting recordings are synced. You can export everything as text, audio or captions. I tried the three of them and they are great ways to share the recording with your team members.

Otter AI is the right choice if you:

✅ You are tired of manually taking meeting notes

✅ You want a place where your whole sales team can collaborate on notes

✅ You're a Zoom or Google Meet regular

✅ You don't mind bots joining the meetings.

Otter AI isn’t the best option if you:

❌ You need to work without the internet.

❌ You don't like bots invading the privacy of the attendees.

❌ You're looking for real-time assistance.

Zoom AI Companion Features

Whiteboard Feature: A Visual Tool for Organizing Meeting Insights

Zoom debuts new AI Companion capability for Whiteboard, expands availability to industries | Zoom - Zoom

I have spent a lot of time trying out Zoom AI Companion's Whiteboard feature. I am a big sketcher and outliner, and I was so excited about how I could use this tool after a meeting.

You can just open the Whiteboard and start sketching out everything you talked about.

I really like how flexible this tool is. You have the ability to use all these different types of visualization

  • Stickers for key points (they are so cute I love them),
  • Tables if you want to organize your thoughts,
  • Mind maps if your thoughts are going in so many different directions, and,
  • Flowcharts if you want to visualize relationships.

For example - I was in a meeting deciding on the launch of a new product, and used the Mindmap to organize all the stages, and added stickers to the must-do tasks. Created tables to outline who does what. It's a lot of fun and creative in my opinion.

However, it does consume time. If your main productivity goal is studying, or spending time on learning and brainstorming, this whiteboard feature might be of help to you.

AI-Powered Meeting Q&A: Catch Up Without Interrupting

Asking in-meeting questions with the AI Companion

If you are a late-comer to a meeting, you are going to love the AI-Powered Meeting Q&A feature. Because I know how it feels to be late to a meeting and not really know how it started. (We all have been there!)

And instead of interrupting everyone and saying "What did I miss?", you can just ask the AI Companion and it will give you a quick recap of what happened. I literally tested this (because I am really bad at timing - don't judge me!).

I would just type in my question to the AI and it would tell me whatever I missed. This is really good for when you are in a busy day with a bunch of meetings and you miss a couple of minutes here and there.

Smart Recording: Organized, Searchable Meeting Content

smart recording by Zoom ai companion | otter ai vs zoom ai companion

Zoom AI Smart Recording organises your meeting notes. It breaks down your recordings into Smart Chapters, picks out the important information and even gives you coaching tips on how you express yourself.

In a bit more detail, Smart Chapters breaks down everything into topics so you can easily find what you need. The Recording Highlights pick out the important information, and the Meeting Coaching Analytics shows you things like how much you talk versus how much you listen.

It is really helpful if you are trying to improve your meeting running skills, or just want to keep track of events and what happened

Zoom AI Companion is the Right Choice if You:

✅ You are already using Zoom for everything.

✅ You need AI to summarise meeting minutes

✅ You want to have a meeting analysis and collaborate on a business plan on a whiteboard

Zoom AI Companion Isn’t the Best Option if You:

❌ You need something that works on different platforms

❌ You are really concerned about privacy

❌ You don't have a paid Zoom Plan.

Customer Reviews: What People Are Saying

Jamie Reviews | G2 Rating 4.9/5.0

Users Love

  • "It can actually transcribe, summarize, and detect action items with way more accuracy than the rest."
  • "Jamie saves me the work of a human assistant (approx. 45k annual salary)."
  • "Jamie does not rely on bots joining my calls and works seamlessly without any plugins."
  • "The meeting notes that Jamie creates are outstanding, and the best I have seen so far."
  • "The notes are sorted automatically for me, saving a lot of time when revisiting my notes."

Users Dislike

  • "From a realistic point of view, it must be acknowledged that the relatively new tool certainly still has potential for optimization."
  • "Jamie excels in creating precise meeting summaries, but it shines brightest once it learns your specific terminology. This initial setup requires some hands-on input."
  • "Maybe they should adjust their pricing a bit, but that's my personal take."

Otter AI Reviews| G2 Rating 4.4/5.0

Users Love

  • "Otter provides better meeting insights along with accurate and real-time transcription of meetings."
  • "Otter.ai has done an outstanding job of capturing esoteric, technical jargon, making it super easy to go back to notes."
  • "It takes the whole points and at the end gives you a short summary regarding the whole meeting."
  • "Having one source of truth for all meeting recordings is great, with the summary of the call being available right there."
  • "Conversation Intelligence is the best feature. Summaries, outlines, and action items are very accurate and to the point."

Users Dislike

  • "For free features - it is very limited and sometimes in noisy environments or in slow networks it struggles a bit."
  • "The least helpful feature has been its ability to collect summaries and takeaways from meetings. This has just taken a bit of trial and error."
  • "If anyone is not a premium member, they will only have limited monthly minutes of the Otter.ai Notetaker, which is a drawback."
  • "The user interface is scattered and confusing, there are many 'known issues,' and the permissions seem complex."
  • "Having to tag endless speakers. Spending 1 hour to tag all the speakers in a 10-hour meeting only to have to do it all again."

Zoom AI Companion Reviews

Users love:

  • "The AI tool is crazy! I use it for almost every meeting and it's super accurate. It can even translate and summarize in other languages too, not just English."
  • "Actually, many doctors are using AI tools for note-taking... However, the advantage is that these follow strict privacy policies, and delete the voice recording as soon as a transcript is produced."
  • "Usefulness is probably a meeting-by-meeting thing - but I use it (IT) and had one today that I forwarded onto my team as an example - it was remarkably succinct and accurate."
  • "Ohhh and also, I use it a lot to take my meeting summaries and use AI to draft my follow-up email. I use it as a starter template for my recaps emails."
  • "Zoom Revenue Accelerator is the ultimate version of what you are looking for, but it costs extra."

Users Dislike:

  • "What’s not cool (possibly)... they add this AI stuff out of nowhere, enabled. Suppose there's some off-topic, possibly colorful talk happening between attendees before/after say, a customer, is joined."
  • "Zoom’s AI summaries are okay in a pinch, but I’ve found them too surface-level for anything beyond a quick recap."
  • "Zoom’s AI summaries are decent for catching up on missed meetings or quick recaps, but yeah, they can feel more like a vague overview than actionable details."
  • "For me I think it would be cool if I could have an AI prompt that allowed me to query all my past meetings. Allowing instant accountability for anything that has been promised in project meetings. Would that be too much?"
  • "Yeah, we do that as well. Usually after I remind my guys to keep it updated. If only I could get it updating automatically. That would be awesome!"

Final Verdict: Otter AI, Zoom AI Companion, or Jamie?

I have taken hours and hours testing these three AI meeting assistants, so I wanted to give you my honest thoughts.

Otter AI: Good for Live Transcription, But Not So Much When It Comes To Summary

I have used Otter AI quite a lot and what I can tell you is that it is quite good at one thing: live transcription. If you need that live caption of a meeting (or to search for transcripts later) then you are going to like Otter.

Now is where the issues begin. The AI summary is really basic. The speaker identification is also terrible (I had to manually tag speakers in many of my meetings).

Also if you are conscious about privacy (as you should be!) then the cloud-based storage might be a bit of a concern. Also not to mention, the bots joining the meeting could come across as intrusive.

I am not the only one concerned, but an Otter user as well.

One downside of Otter.ai is that it depends on a good internet connection. Slow speeds or outages can cause delays or even data loss if a recording drops. Also, for those concerned about privacy, storing sensitive audio in the cloud might feel uncomfortable. -G2

Zoom AI Companion: A Great Zoom-Exclusive Tool, But Limited Beyond That

I've tested Zoom AI Companion extensively and found it to be quite interactive. I really liked the real-time Q&A and Whiteboard features. They made meetings more interactive. If you are already using Zoom for everything, you will find it quite useful.

What I didn't like is that it's only available with Zoom (yes I know it's a Zoom tool, but that's quite limiting for me). I tried to use it to take notes on my other meetings on Teams and Meet, but I couldn't. I found the summaries to be okay but not very useful.

Jamie: The Right Balance of Privacy, Intelligence, and Flexibility

Jamie structures your meetings and helps you make sense of them. I can use it with any other meeting tool. What I truly love about it is that it's really easy to use. So I would like to explain a bit more about what I love about Jamie.

  • There is no complex setup, you simply click on "Start Meeting" and it will do the work
  • Their summaries are so good, with zero to minimal edits.
  • That Executive Assistant Sidebar (CTRL + J) is so useful - I use it all the time!
  • Three AI models work together to help you in real-time. No more opening browsers or tabs, just a shortcut would do!

And you know what I truly like about Jamie? We don't hide premium features behind a paywall. You can try it all in our free plan.

So, Which One Would I Recommend?

So here is my honest recommendation, based on my experience:

  • If you are into real-time transcription and don't mind doing the bots, I would recommend Otter AI
  • If you use Zoom every day, I would recommend Zoom AI Companion.
  • If you want meeting notes that feel like they were written by a human being, work offline and online, keep your data private, have no bots, help you in real-time with 3 LLMs, and work anywhere - I would recommend Jamie.

I know it can be a bit confusing to pick a meeting tool, it's all about finding what truly makes your work easier. And if you think Jamie is the tool for you, give it a try, it's free!

Just one meeting is all you need to determine if Jamie is right for you. No obligations, no commitments, just better meeting notes.

Using Multiple Platforms?

Jamie works on all of them.
